The country’s economy is dominated by the oil industry. And the president has sought to counter American influence in the region, seizing control of the oil assets of American and European energy companies, and in other ways consolidating state control over the economy and nationalizing telephone and electricity companies. He proclaimed a “Bolivarian revolution,” named for the hero of Latin American independence, and proclaimed the United States to be a threat, in part because of its indirect support for a coup that briefly ousted him in 2002.

I think it's ridiculous that you think there's a price to pay by Chavez for "introducing Iran to the Western Hemisphere." Is this not a free world? When did the US get to decide when and where other people's of the world should be able to travel? This is just another case of the US government imposing it's will upon another country, Venezuela, and using scare tactics through the media to ensure the America public that this is a justified war they are about to begin.

Under Venezuela's constitution, Elias Jaua, the vice president, would take the president's place during "temporary" absences of up to 90 days and would serve the rest of his term if Mr Chavez stepped down or died.

My recent visit to Amazonas to visit my home and family demonstrated how bad the situation is in Venezuela. Security and crime is the worst I've ever seen, the distribution of resources is politicly directed and where these resources are withheld Chavez's people blame the opposition local governments for not helping the needy. The crackdown of the free press only furthers the sense of alienation many feel and express in private but with guarded caution. My desire is to establish a venomous snakebite treatment facility in Amazonas but state officials while interested in the project say in this toxic political environment it is not possible at this time. I'm sure I express the sentiments of many educated and capable ex-patriots worldwide that want to return and help reconstruct a country we can be proud of but must wait and hope Venezuelans have the courage and foresight to elect Capriles and kickout the regime that has ruined this once great nation. The future generations of middle and upper classes must work hard to insure that social and political reforms take place that make life better for all Venezuelans in a free and just society and not just their own self-serving interest that others like Chavez cannot seize control.
