Connie Mack Asks Obama, Clinton, Pelosi and Reid to List Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela as Sponsor of Terrorism

This article was originally posted by Sunshine State News

A day after writing to Hugo Chavez that he intended to continue the fight for the American government to list Venezuela as a state sponsor of terrorism, Republican U.S. Rep. Connie Mack of Florida did just that, sending a letter to President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

“I write to you today to urge you to immediately finalize the steps required to designate Venezuela  as a state sponsor of terrorism,” wrote Mack. “Hugo Chavez has politically, materially and diplomatically supported international terrorist groups, threatening the freedom, security and prosperity of the United States and our allies. We must stop all interaction with the tyrannical regime of Mr. Hugo Chavez.

“As a beacon of freedom, the United States must stand firm against those who harbor terrorists, threaten our allies, and rebuke the freedoms we are committed to protect,” continued Mack. “Hugo Chavez’s solidarity with internationally recognized terrorist groups, such as the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), endangers stability in the region and prompts national security concerns for our nation.

Chávez working to expand ties to terrorism

U.S. Rep. Connie Mack, R-Fort Myers, the ranking Republican of the House Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, blasted Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez’s comments this weekend, where Chavez called Israel a “genocidal state” that “will be put in its place.”  Chavez’s comments came during a meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad, who is on a tour of Latin American countries this week.

Mack said: “For Hugo Chavez, nothing beats a public appearance to draw Venezuela closer to another state sponsor of terrorism, threatening the United States and its ally, Israel. This past Saturday, Hugo Chavez met with Syria’s president, spreading the same anti-freedom and anti-Semitic message that ties Venezuela to Iran. His hateful rhetoric against Israel and his unfair targeting of Venezuela’s Jewish community amounts to state-sponsored anti-Semitism, and it must stop.

“Chavez is also working to expand Venezuela’s ties to Syria, a state sponsor of terrorism. This economic relationship, however, is nothing more than an opportunity to further spread their anti-freedom message throughout the hemisphere. Chavez’s close ties to Syria and Iran give these countries a foothold in Latin America.”

“U.S. law clearly states that a state sponsor of terrorism is one that repeatedly provides support to acts of international terrorism. Hugo Chavez has done so and is a clear threat to our hemisphere. That’s why the United States must add Venezuela to the list of state sponsors of terrorism without delay, and why we must continue to stand with the people of Venezuela as they fight for freedom from Chavez’s iron fist.”

Mack is a sponsor of legislation (H.Res.872) calling on Venezuela to be designated a state sponsor of terrorism. He is also the sponsor of a resolution (H.Con.Res.124) expressing Congress’ support for and solidarity with the Venezuelan Jewish community.

Mack Condemns Hugo Chavez for Continuing to Shut Down Free Press in Venezuela

Continuing with our coverage on the lack of freedom of the press in Venezuela, this morning TMC News reported that Congressman Connie Mack from Florida, condemned Hugo Chavez for issuing an arrest warrant for Dr. Guillermo Zuloaga, the president of Globovision, and Dr. Zuloaga’s son, William Zuloaga Siso.  Mack, who appered on CNN’s Larry King last week, to discuss the movie “South of the Border” from Oliver Stone, said that the US is a great nation ”because people like Oliver Stone have the right to say anything he wants, even if it is praising a communist and two-bit dictator. The people of Venezuela deserve the same rights of free speech and expression.”

Mack will participate in a panel discussion on the documentary and Hugo Chavez’s influence in the Western Hemisphere and press freedom in Latin America, to be held on June 16th at the House Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere.
